General Q & A

What is Microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion (often referred to as Microderm) is a cosmetic procedure popular for the treatment of many skin conditions. The stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. Microdermabrasion is used to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on the skin. The procedure is not painful and requires no anesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal but is less effective with raised scars. Microdermabrasion can also be used for treatment of acne, but must be repeated periodically to be effective.

What are the benefits of Microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion has been medically proven as a simple and painless treatment. Microdermabrasion promotes the activation of collagen fibers in the skin through increased stimulation and circulation, enhancing skin appearance and texture. Microdermabrasion through exfoliation improves and lightens hyperpigmentation (brown spots), helps rid the skin of fine lines, improves the appearance of acne scarred skin, aids with the treatment of acne, and can improve the appearance of new "pink" stretch marks. After a revitalizing microdermabrasion treatment, the rejuvenated skin is visibly healthy and radiant.

How often can the treatment be performed? At Ageless Aesthetics we specialize in custom tailoring to the clients individual skin care needs. Although there are immediate benefits after one Microdermabrasion treatment, for optimal results we recommend a series of treatments. Treatment times can range from every two weeks, monthly, or quarterly.

How much time is needed for each treatment? On average, the client will spend thirty minutes to one hour in treatment. Results will be noticed immediately, but because every individual's skin is different, the visible improvements will vary.

What are Chemical Peels?  There are several types of peels each utilizing a different compound to create a peeling effect. Medium to deep peels use the chemical TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) Light peels use glycolic acids (natural fruit acid derived from sugar cane) to create a peeling effect. TCA and glycolic peels can effectively improve many skin conditions including: dull, weathered skin, freckling, uneven pigmentation, sun damage, fine wrinkles, and shallow acne scars. The function of a chemical peel is to create an even and controlled exfoliation of several layers of damaged skin cells. The process exposes a fresh layer of skin improving the skins tone and texture in addition to removing old, weathered and damaged skin cells. The peel stimulates new healthy cells to grow, thereby tightening the skin and minimizing wrinkles.

How are the peels performed? Glycolic and TCA peels are performed in the treatment rooms with a medically trained licensed aesthetician. A solution containing TCA or glycolic acid is applied to your skin. Discomfort is minimal. When TCA or Glycolic acid is applied to the skin it causes the top layers of the epidermis to dry up and peel off for over a period of several days. After the old damaged skin has peeled away, it exposes a new layer of healthy skin giving you a more youthful appearance.

Is it painful? Our client's comfort is the top priority at Ageless Aesthetics. Chemical peels will have a warm sensation when applied to the skin, however it is not painful and requires no topical anesthesia.

Are there any special preparations prior to my treatment? We suggest that you refrain from any topical prescription medications(such as Retin-A, Differin, Tazorac, Avage, etc.) 5 days prior to your treatment. It is also important to refrain from any waxing or use of depilatories (nair, veet, etc) in the areas you are scheduled to have treated for 5 days prior to your appointment.  Always consult your dispensing physician before discontinuing use of any prescription medication.

Are there any special instructions I should follow after my treatment? Yes, post care is crucial in your success. During the first 48 hours following your treatment is important to keep your body temperature regulated. Do not apply ice or ice water to chemically treated areas, refrain from hot tubs, steam, or saunas. Do not put your face directly into a hot shower spray. Do not go swimming, or participate in activities that would cause excessive perspiration. Do not use loofahs or other means of mechanical exfoliation. Do not apply any type of retinoid or aggressive cleanser until your skin has normalized. Avoid direct sun exposure and excessive heat. Use a minimum of an SPF 30 for daily sun protection. Stay cool! Getting heated internally can cause hyperpigmentation.

Will I peel from Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels? Depending on the treatment performed you should not necessarily expect to "peel", however you may have light flaking in a few localized areas for a couple of days. Most clients who undergo these treatments have only residual redness for anywhere from one to twelve hours.

Can I apply Makeup After the treatment? It is ideal to allow the skin to stabilize and rest overnight if possible. However, makeup may be applied if necessary. We recommend a mineral based foundation that will still allow the skin to breathe. We will be happy to assist you in the selection of your mineral foundation upon request.
